Brent Erickson, Executive Director of the CW ChamberThree Great Events in a Row, Participate!
By Brent Erickson, Executive Director

The goal for the CW Chamber’s monthly luncheons and events are to balance interesting and informative speakers along with skills related speakers. I believe our last event, plus our two upcoming events are a great example of the quality of our programming. First the January 19th Luncheon event featured the first-time Camas-Washougal Economic Development Association (CWEDA) CEO Paul Dennis presented jointly with Lisa Nisenfeld, the new CEO of the Clark-County focused Columbia River Economic Development Council (CREDC). It’s very important that our members understand the business climate of Clark County as a whole and East Clark County specifically, so they can gauge their own future growth.

The January Luncheon presentation addressed the challenges as well as the benefits of doing business locally. It was very informative to understand their limitations as well as the places they excel in aiding business; that is not only moving into the area, but also growing and expanding.

On Thursday, February 2nd, the CW Chamber is very happy to be involved in the official “State of the County” address being held in Washougal at the High School. While the event is being officially operated by Clark County staff, our CW Chamber President, Mike Nerland will be part of the event speaking on behalf of Camas and Washougal. The keynote speaker will be Commissioner Chairperson Marc Boldt. This event is free to attend and we encourage the entire membership to attend.  More event info on page 5 of this newsletter.

To keep the programming going we will host the East Clark County “State of the Schools” Luncheon in February on the 16th at Camas Meadows. Our schools are a large factor in our recruitment effort of businesses to the region. Relocating businesses tend to look for existing buildings to meet their needs, the right tax incentives/structures and great schools for their employees. Of course that is not a comprehensive list of “must have’s” but schools are at the top, when making the final decision.

The CW Chamber’s relationship with our local schools runs deep and its something we are very proud of. The CW Chamber provides two scholarships to graduating seniors and calls on its members to be active participants during senior boards or for the Washougal JAS program. Also, Chamber members actively donate to events like “stuff the bus” and love to bring the students down to showcase their talents at the “Hometown Holidays” event or during the Camas Days Grande Parade. Additionally we run an Education and Economic Development Committee at the Chamber to address additional needs. At the February luncheon we will hear from both the Superintendents from the Camas and Washougal School Districts about the future of public education in 2012-2013. We hope you are all able to attend. A 24 hour rsvp is required, the cost is $15/member. See front page for more details.

Mike NerlandAs the Weather Turns, So Does the outlook of our Local Economy
By Mike Nerland of the Camas School District

It is amazing how weather conditions in the Northwest can change so rapidly.  Just a couple weeks ago the Camas and Washougal School Districts had to call a snow day because of inclement weather.  Today, as I write this message, there is blue sky, sunshine, and a temperature of over 50 degrees outside. Although I know we have a long way to go, it makes me yearn for spring with longer days, sunshine, and blue skies.

The change in weather is analogous to the slow but positive movement in our local economy. It was great to hear from Lisa Nisenfeld  head of the Columbia River Economic Development Commission and Paul Dennis head of the Camas-Washougal Economic Development Association (CWEDA) at our January Chamber Luncheon. Their joint optimism about the local economy is somewhat like coming out of a long dark winter and finally seeing a few new tips of growth slowly starting to show up here and there. For years the CREDC has promoted economic growth throughout Clark County.  The formation of the new CWEDA will speed creation of new business and jobs in East County.  With the partnership of the C-W Chamber, The Downtown Camas Association, the cities of Camas and Washougal, and the Port of Camas-Washougal, the economic outlook is “rosy” and spring will be here before we know it.

Now is a great time for all of our C-W members that have survived the “winter” and are looking forward to “warmer weather” to thank everyone within your business or organization that work so hard each and every day. Simple recognition can go a long way toward motivating your employees, increasing their energy and enthusiasm, and in making them more effective at what they do for you. It’s an easy and valuable way to promote a healthy, productive office.  So, I encourage you to make the effort and take a moment to recognize your employees. It’ll provide that little ray of sunshine, reminding them of the coming new season.  On behalf of the Camas Washougal Chamber Board and staff,  I extend a big thank you to our members who, even through the darkest of winters, make East County a great place to work, live and play.
